Chapter 17

Lucy Stone

I hate him.

That is the first thought I have when alpha Winslow’s face appears in the doorway of my RV.

Sure, I’ve never been a particularly liking person. I’m not like Summer, or Jason, or Tania. Most people annoy me, and sometimes I can barely tolerate my closest friends. But I don’t think I’ve ever known the meaning of true hatred until this moment.

I watch him. Taking in every familiar detail. The curve of his mouth as he gives me that cold smile. The knuckles of his hands as his fingers flex at his sides. The way his shoulders square as he pushes past Hank, his enforcer. The glinting silver emblem on his black jacket. The spattering of dirt across his boots.

I can feel Tania’s fear through the pack link as she takes in his scent. I can feel Theo’s alarm as he circles the sky above us, warning the pack that someone new has entered my RV.

The wrongs this male has committed are innumerable. And now he is here. On my territory. In my RV. Threatening my pack.

My wolf stares at him, silent and watching.

Alpha Winslow is in my RV, I tell the pack through the bond, doing my best to mute the noise and feelings bombarding me.

I need to focus.

I need my gift.

I close my eyes, sending a silent prayer to Morrigan.

You gave me this gift, I tell her accusingly.

I never wanted it. I would have given it back a thousand times over. I’ve only ever been grateful for it once, and that was when it helped me to save Tobias.

You gave me this stupid, horrible gift and now you need to help me.

I know it’s no way to talk to a goddess, but honestly, I don’t care anymore. If she exists, she deserves my anger.

Show me, I demand, not really sure what I’m asking for.

Show me how to get rid of Cooper. How to protect my pack. How to bring Tobias back to me.

Show me what to do.

I clench my jaw against the answering silence and open my eyes. Cooper is watching me curiously, eyes trailing over my face as if he’s weighing up my value.

“Miss Lucy Stone.”

“Cooper.”

There is no missing the way his jaw ticks at my informal use of his name. At the way I don’t call him alpha.

Good. He’s not my alpha anymore. And I swear to all the silent gods that he’ll never be my alpha again.

“Take a seat,” Cooper orders, tilting his chin imperiously towards the low bench seat. A folding chair sits across from it, even though the table has been tucked away for the night.

“I’d rather stand.”

Cooper gives an indulgent smile, as if I’m an unruly toddler, unreasonably demanding to have my own way.

“You’re a smart girl. Up until recently, I would have said you were a loyal wolf.”

He sighs, drawing one large hand through his dark hair before giving a mournful shake of his head.

“It turns out you weren’t as loyal as I thought. I can only hope you don’t disappoint me further.
